Killing Kennedy

We try to imagine what it must have been like within the moments surrounding JFK's assassination. Those few ticking seconds where a nation’s twisting grasp on its place in the world flipped our collective insides like a sudden bend on a wooden roller-coaster. A few microseconds prior we were the well scrubbed center of the universe. A few microseconds later we had lost our anchor and were in a free-fall trying to make sense of it all, still cheering and smiling in a heartbeat of disbelief. We feel everything we know slipping through our fingers. We are weightless. -- Client: National Geographic Title: "Killing Kennedy" SVP Creative: Andy Baker Design Director: Christos Devaris Writer/Creative Director: Tyler Korba Creative Director, Design: Brian Everett Production Manager: Kevin Lahr Production Company: Variable Creative Development: National Geographic, Variable & Mill+ Director: Rama Allen & Jonathan Bregel Writer: Rama Allen Cinematographer: Khalid Mohtaseb Executive Producer: Tyler Ginter Producer: Alex Friedman Production Supervisor: Paige DeMarco VFX Supervisor - Adrian Hurley Phantom Tech - Edward Richardson AC/DIT: Daniel Stewart & Jeffrey Levine Production Designer: Joseph Sciacca Photographer: Joey L Post Production: Mill+ Head of Content: Ian Bearce Post Production Producer: Adrienne Winterhalter & Richard Schwab Editor: Caleb Woods Assistant Editor: Jessica Ledoux Lead Compositor: Danny Morris Titles: Wesley Ebelhar Score/Sound Design: Fall On Your Sword -- www.WeAreVariable.com hello@WeAreVariable.com

BLOOD ROAD : MOTION DESIGN REEL

A collection of shots from the feature-length documentary film Blood Road. In addition to creating the opening graphic sequence for the film, I was responsible for creating all the information graphics, custom map and terrain visuals, and historical archive footage treatments. Knowing that the design and animation sequences were going to be a crucial storytelling component throughout the film, I worked extensively with the director, Nicholas Schrunk, from the very early stages of the project to ensure the graphics successfully communicated the story points to our audience. Blood Road follows the journey of ultra-endurance mountain bike athlete Rebecca Rusch and her Vietnamese riding partner, Huyen Nguyen, as they pedal 1,200 miles along the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail through the dense jungles of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Their goal: to reach the crash site and final resting place of Rebecca’s father, a U.S. Air Force pilot shot down over Laos some 40 years earlier. During this poignant voyage of self discovery, the women push their bodies to the limit while learning more about the historic ‘Blood Road’ they’re pedaling and how the Vietnam War shaped their lives in different ways. — www.bloodroadfilm.com — Production : Red Bull Media House Director : Nicholas Schrunk Producer : Sandra Kuhn Art Director : John Likens Design + Animation : John Likens, Wesley Ebelhar Reel music : Remains by Shlohmo

Killing Kennedy / Director's Cut

We are an audience to a collision we cannot prevent. We feel everything we know slipping through our fingers. We are weightless. I wanted to create a piece that got inside the last few milliseconds before a nation's collective insides flipped. Right before the disorienting lurch of the ground beneath our feet, somewhere between disbelief and comprehension, between cheering and horror. I wanted to find that disconnected weightless feeling when something of immeasurable and uncontrollable importance happens right in front of you, and then run it backwards to the decisive moment that initiated it. The VO is built from JFK's final speech, given that morning in Ft. Worth before traveling to Dallas. Huge thanks to Rob Lowe, Ginnifer Goodwin and Will Rothhaar for putting up with wildly spinning cameras and split second takes. More thanks to a great team of collaborators and the whole crew at Variable and Jonathan Bregel who co-directed, helping us cover an enormous amount of ground, multiple sets, and Phantom/Red/8mm shooting on an incredibly complex and multi-faceted shoot. The Exorcist - Main Title Sequence

FOX TV series “The Exorcist” reimagines the saga of the 1973 feature film in present day Chicago, following Father Tomas Ortega as he tries to save the Rance family. For the show’s opening titles, the network turned to Method Studios to craft an elegantly eerie opening sequence with sinister overtones. Led by director Johnny Likens, the Method team designed a concept that illustrated a feeling of dread, with darkness insidiously overtaking light. Likens traveled to Chicago and shot various city elements and architecture to incorporate into the look. He also experimented with macro-level shots of milk reacting with India ink, using the black and white as a visual metaphor for the creeping sense of fear. “When filming the ink reacting under a macro lens, no two takes were the same, and the unique marbling effect was a perfect visual to capture that eerie feeling that we were going for,” explained Likens. “Our team did a wonderful job with crafting something interesting and beautiful.” The Method team shot additional live action elements including an authentic 18th century Bible and hands holding a rosary. The final sequence combines all of these elements, utilizing dimensionalized stills and clever compositing (including adding animated clouds and birds) to portray the still imagery from Chicago as moving images. “The Exorcist” recently wrapped its 10-episode debut season on FOX. -- Creative Director: John Likens Lead Design: Wesley Ebelhar Compositors: Sean Wehrli , Urosh Otashevich Producer: Susan Harris Executive Producer: Angela Lupo

Killing Kennedy

Just like the movie, we wanted our concept spot for the National Geographic Channel's Killing Kennedy to step away from the familiar and show our audience something about the JFK story that hadn't been seen before. We worked closely with Variable and Mill+ to bring the idea of Kennedy and Oswald's worlds colliding to life in the form of reverse and forward narratives that did the same. Revealing the voice of the promo as Oswald's also spoke to a side of the story that viewers might not expect to see. The experience was amazing from start to finish... huge thanks to everyone involved!
